Garden of the Gods Juniper Tree

Driving home from my Colorado Workshop in October, I planned on staying the night in Colorado Springs. As I entered the city in late afternoon, I was closely watching the road signs for hotels to investigate. Instead, I noticed a sign for the “Garden of the Gods” city park. Sounds like a good detour!

Garden of the Gods Park is an amazing, free city park in the shadow of Pike’s Peak in Colorado Springs. The road that loops through the park is one-way, though, so if you see something from the car that you want to see on foot, be sure to stop at the very next pull-off because it’s a long way back around. Much of the land in the park is also off-limits to foot traffic, which is unfortunate, but obviously a good thing for protection of the natural resources.

This juniper tree set against one of the red rock faces in the evening sun immediately caught my eye.

It’s an incredible park (especially for a municipal park) and if you’re ever in the area you have to make a visit. Be prepared for large numbers of people, though. I was there on a Sunday so it was extremely busy.

Here’s a panoramic shot of the park taken with my iPhone (if you look very closely you can see the tree from the shot above):
